{"id":2275,"date":"2015-02-08T21:59:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T05:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=2275"},"modified":"2015-02-08T21:59:41","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T05:59:41","slug":"springs-and-shocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=2275","title":{"rendered":"Springs and shocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Springs and shocks arrived recently from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propartsusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ProParts USA<\/a>.\u00a0 When putting together a suspension the actual shocks and springs are just a part of what&#8217;s needed.\u00a0 You want to take a look at how they connect at either end, and take advantage of any improvements possible.<\/p>\n<p>ProParts built a nice set of custom aluminum top hats for the front and rears.\u00a0 Gone are multiple rubber elements, replaced by spherical bearings.\u00a0 The front shock lower mount is also a spherical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_052844508_iOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2276\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_052844508_iOS-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"20150131_052844508_iOS\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_052844508_iOS-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_052844508_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One disadvantage of the Koni 30 series is how Bump adjusts.\u00a0 You have to push this button with the shock fully extended, and &#8220;click&#8221; it through its range.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_053825846_iOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2277\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_053825846_iOS-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"20150131_053825846_iOS\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_053825846_iOS-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150131_053825846_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the rear it&#8217;s not too bad actually, as the spring is separate.\u00a0 The front will be trickier with the spring in place.<\/p>\n<p>So I put things together with some spring lengths based off what I&#8217;d seen on the always-right Internet.\u00a0 6&#8243; front and rear.\u00a0 Of course there is huge variation in this stuff, and 6&#8243; ended up being quite a bit short at both ends.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the car looked with the adjusters at max height front,and about the midpoint rear, with 6&#8243; undergound (if the car weren&#8217;t up on dollies).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150201_070900058_iOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2278\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150201_070900058_iOS-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"20150201_070900058_iOS\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150201_070900058_iOS-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150201_070900058_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The above is one I took while the car was like that.\u00a0 Good news is the bump stop was still about 1\/4&#8243; away from making contact.\u00a0 Yay!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Based on the path the exhaust takes, I think there&#8217;s ~1&#8243; of extra ground clearance to gain by tucking the tubing up closer to those bracing pieces.<\/p>\n<p>The rear spring motion ratio is fairly &#8220;soft&#8221; on the Z.\u00a0 As best I can measure, the spring is centered a little bit over 10&#8243; out on ~17.5&#8243; long arm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150206_050035824_iOS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2280\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150206_050035824_iOS-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"20150206_050035824_iOS\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150206_050035824_iOS-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/20150206_050035824_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately the shock mounts all the way out at the knuckle, providing great chassis and wheel control.<\/p>\n<p>My approach in springing the Z initially is to go a little stiffer in the front, and a little softer in the rear, compared to the fast 350Z&#8217;s that are out there &#8211;
