{"id":1675,"date":"2013-01-01T22:07:58","date_gmt":"2013-01-02T06:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=1675"},"modified":"2013-01-01T22:07:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-02T06:07:58","slug":"it-runs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=1675","title":{"rendered":"It runs!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spent every spare moment I had today on this thing, and at last, it runs!<\/p>\n<p>Much of today&#8217;s\u00a0work was in mounting and wiring the ignition coil, which we are allowed to replace in ST.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ignition_and_catch_can.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1676\" alt=\"Mallory ignition coil, Moroso catch can on Jason Rhoades 1967 Z28 Camaro for STX\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ignition_and_catch_can-300x245.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ignition_and_catch_can-300x245.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ignition_and_catch_can-1024x837.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since the car is heater delete, the heater blanking panel makes a nice convenient spot for mounting both the coil and the Moroso catch can, without making any new holes in the firewall &#8211; which after <del>45<\/del> 46 years, has seen\u00a0a bit of tinkering.<\/p>\n<p>Stock\/ST also allow for catch cans, so long as factory PCV\/emissions functionality is retained.\u00a0 In this case, the &#8220;input&#8221; to the can is from the PCV valve, while the &#8220;output&#8221; goes to the vacuum port on the carburetor.\u00a0 For those not familiar with catch cans, the idea is to have something that captures the misty oil vapors that escape a PCV system under load, and separate out the oil from the air.\u00a0 Any oil consumed by the engine will combust, but it does so at a lower temperature than gasoline, and can lead to detonation\/preignition.\u00a0 This is bad on a normal engine, even worse on a high compression engine like this 302, and extremely bad on a forced-induction car.<\/p>\n<p>With the catch an in place, the oily mist is turned into regular oil, which can be emptied out when needed.\u00a0 The engine continues to enjoy a functional PCV system, but through it, only ingests clean air.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The remainder of the work was spent under the dash, getting the DL1 and DASH2 all wired up and talking.\u00a0 Still figuring out the exact song-and-dance needed to get the DASH and DL1 to talk properly, was able to get what I wanted after some effort, but there is probably an easier way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1050019.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1677\" alt=\"Functional DASH2 in Jason Rhoades Camaro\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1050019-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1050019-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/P1050019-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the plugs out, verified the motor made oil pressure just using the starter, and that the sender\/dash combo reflected the pressure.\u00a0 Still haven&#8217;t wired in the fuel gauge or coolant temp sensors, hence their bogus readings.<\/p>\n<p>Later, put the plugs in and ran the spark plug wires.\u00a0 The MSD wires I have are all wrong, will need to get different ones, and route them more carefully.\u00a0 But at 9:09PM, it started and ran!\u00a0 Since the 20 month old was just getting to sleep I shut it off right away.<\/p>\n<p>Still lots to do, but this was a gratifying step, and I met my goal\u00a0to &#8220;have it running by New Year&#8217;s&#8221; &#8211; even if it was New Year&#8217;s day.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spent every spare moment I had today on this thing, and at last, it runs!
