{"id":1166,"date":"2011-09-26T21:41:36","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T04:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2011-09-27T08:40:29","modified_gmt":"2011-09-27T15:40:29","slug":"transmission-rebuilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/?p=1166","title":{"rendered":"Transmission rebuilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Got the transmission back today from Harold&#8217;s Automotive in El Cajon.\u00a0 Like the rest of the car, it needed just about everything new &#8211; new second and third gears, new synchros, shift forks, and seals.<\/p>\n<p>Made some marks at the input and output shafts to verify gear ratios-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.45.13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1168\" title=\"M21\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.45.13-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.45.13-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.45.13-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I suspected from the drive home (now over 1 year ago!) first gear is the tall 2.2, making this an M21 transmission, the standard unit in the &#8217;67 Z28.\u00a0 Apparently the M20 wide-ratio was available as an option.\u00a0 Might seek one out if ProSolo launches with this tall first gear don&#8217;t work well.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing it could be is the fabled &#8220;rock crusher&#8221; M22 Muncie.\u00a0 The M22 had a much shallower gear helix angle which made the gears stronger, but the transmission was very loud.<\/p>\n<p>M20 and 21&#8217;s have an average helix angle of 35 degrees, M22&#8217;s have an average angle of 21 degrees.\u00a0 This one&#8217;s definitely an M21:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.55.15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1169\" title=\"SAMSUNG\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.55.15-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.55.15-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.rhoadescamaro.com\/build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/2011-09-26-21.55.15-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Got the transmission back today from Harold&#8217;s Automotive in El Cajon.\u00a0 Like the rest of the car, it needed just about everything new &#8211; new second and third gears, new synchros, shift forks, and seals.
